Grandtully Paddle Weekend.

The weekend started with the “hardcore” who went up to Tully on the Friday night when the weather was, well let’s just say, miserable for camping, but the flip side of course is that generally means it will be good for kayaking!
The rain was still falling on Saturday morning and the river was rising to somewhere about the 1.2m (sepa) mark so it was looking good, high but good… (in-fact, nearly as good as John’s shiny new boat which we all had our photo’s taken around) 25+ paddlers including two canoes put in just above the bridge at Aberfeldy and within a few minutes of putting on some of the team obviously felt it was a bit hot so had a wee swim to cool off whilst the slow coaches were getting on the water.
Once we re-grouped, we set of down-stream catching a few eddies along the way which was fun as the eddie lines were confused to say the least.
Whilst making our way down we decided to film our own version of Titanic starring Fiona who heroically stood up at the front of Martin’s canoe and with arms wide, she also decided to go for the one leg up on the bow whilst posing for the camera, well done Fiona. One of the many highlights on the trip.
A quick stop for lunch, a wee shuttle and then back on the water for the final leg down to Grandtully Rapid which was looking a bit chunky. At the takeout, we had a couple of swimmers, mainly just because there was limited room to get out but that resulted in a boat heading off down the rapid on a solo mission, heading for the sea, so John in his infinite wisdom with his shiny brand new 9 feet long boat thought it would be a great idea for me to go downstream with him to retrieve the boat although I’m sure he just suggested me in the hope I might fall out my wee boat and swim 😉 but off we went, right down through the middle and managed to catch the boat at the last feature so all good. Boat and paddler reunited.
Highlights of the trip for me were the great company, the great food well prepared for our return, the Titanic movie, the fact that even after a wee swim, the swimmers were still smiling like they’d won a tenner at the bingo!
Hero’s of the day were Martin for taking on Tully Rapid in an open boat, Fiona for being brave enough to stand up in Martin’s boat, Vicki for the endless smiles despite a couple of swims and everyone else as they made it a very memorable day.
