Hazard on River Ayr - 2008/07/04 10:13
Hi,
Just to let you know of a potential hazard on the River Ayr.
Network Rail are currently undertaking the refurbishment of the railway viaduct at Enterkine, just above Gadgirth bridge, near Annbank.
As part of their works they have strung an 'oil protection boom' across the full width of the river immediately below the railway viaduct. This sits on the surface of the river, but could still present a significant hazard to paddlers on this section should they become entangled in it.
The boom is there in order to protect the river downstream of the site in the event of an oil spill during the works.
I have spoken to both SEPA and to the contractor - Carillion plc - about the risk to paddlers. Carillion have agreed to post signs well upstream of the viaduct warning that the boom is there.
I strongly suggest that any groups paddling this section go and have a look at the boom before deciding to proceed beyond the railway viaduct. Portage should be possible via the River Ayr walkway on river right, albeit the get out will be difficult, or fishermans paths on river left.
Cheers,
Gavin
