Introduction to Rivers 2010 Participants - 2010/03/11 22:59
We intend to run another "Introduction to Rivers" course from the weekend of the 10th April.
The idea of this course is to take people that have competent kayak control skills (forward and backward paddling, turning and basic support strokes) and give them a grounding in moving water skills so that that can safely participate in river trips. We are also looking to provide SCA 3 Star qualifications at the end of the programme.
If you are interested in joining this course, please reply to this post. Please be aware that space on the course will have to be limited for safety reasons but if demand is high we will look to run more than one course.
Jeremy.
########### UPDATE ############## COURSE INFORMATION... #################################
There has been a very positive response to the river leaders course, both from participants and kayakers prepared to help out.
The River Leaders course on the 4th April was very successful with a turnout of 9 paddlers, and some fine weather. A number of planned and unplanned incidents helped hone the skills of leading a group on moving water.
Therefore the plan for the forthcoming course is this:
1st Session - SUNDAY 11th April.
For this first session, if you have expressed an interest in the course AND you are a club member then please turn up at the back of the Citadel at 0930am.
If you are willing to help out with teaching, then also please turn up for this first week.
The plan is to go to Doon Foot, split into small groups, and run the first session for everyone who is interested.
After this, if participants are interested in progressing AND can make the next 5 weeks, then they can sign up. There will be an entry fee of just £10 for attending the course.
Once we have an idea of who has signed up, we will decide how we run the following 5 weeks depending on teaching cover, numbers and ability. Ideally, this will be done by a short meeting over a wee half after this first session.
We MIGHT be a bit short of kit on this first week as we have kit on order but it has been delayed, so if you have spare boats / decks etc please bring them along!
The goal of the 5 weeks is to work on paddling ability and skills for paddling on moving water. This is basically the BCU 3 star award syllabus which you can read here:
http://www.canoe-england.org.uk/media/pdf/3%20Star%20WW%20Syllabus.pdf
We would look to put on a 3 star assessment at some point in the summer.
Questions? Post them in reply to this message.
Jeremy.
