Foundation Safety and rescue course. - 2010/08/23 19:03 After the last committee meeting there appeared to be some intrest in a safety course but the white water safety and rescue (WWSR) was a bit on the advanced side for some. The Foundation Safety and Rescue Trraining (FSRT) course was mentioned and seemed more appropriate. This gives the basices of safe kayak / canoe and rescue skills all of which are revisited on the WWSR course. The full sylabus is available on the BCU website.

Two of my collegues are capable or running this BCU course, i've had a chat with them and it would seem we would need 6 people at least to make it a goer and the price would be about £50 each. The club would be able to help out with funding of some sort for this course, lets leave the specifics of costs untill we see if any interest exists.

Basically if you're interested in getting the basics of safety correct then this is the course for you. Most of if not all would be run on flat water so paddling ability is not an issue. Any takers?? Post who and when, I would suggest that weekends are easiest for all to make and the location would be at Castle Semple Centre, Lochwinnoch. The dates there are flexible so give me some idea of when suits you.

Re:Foundation Safety and rescue course. - 2010/08/23 19:27 Neil, thanks for the helpful post. I've stuck my name down as reserve for the wwsr course and if I've managed to do the foundation course beforehand that would be even better. I think you're probably right; there could be quite a lot of interest, the minimum age being 14 if I'm correct. That means 3 in our household alone who would benefit. Count me in since I'm keen to get on track for a L1 coaching award.
Thanks, Phil.
BTW i think Russell Cathcart was planning to organise something, it might be helpful to contact him about your proposal.

Re:Foundation Safety and rescue course. - 2010/08/23 19:32 Neil,
Awesome. I've done the FSRT as I needed it as a pre requisite for my UKCC level 1. This is the course that every member of the club should go on. That way everyone has the basics of safety and rescue.
Anyone who has not done any safety and rescue training this is the first step on the ladder.

Re:Foundation Safety and rescue course. - 2010/08/24 13:50 Hi Neil, I've taken some names from the last committee meeting of people who showed interest in the FSRT course.

These being: myself, Maurice Cathcart, Graeme Cathcart, Alan Gough, Brian Alner, Robbie Alner, Archie Harkness and Lee Harkness.

Seems a silly question, but if this is the first step on the ladder for safety and rescue, why are people moving straight to the WWS&R course instead of working their way up to that?

Also, can we get this organised as soon as possible before the water gets chilly? ie, before December 11th/12th so I can complete the WWS&R as well as the FSRT?

One further point, George has posted on the WWS&R course thread that all interested have the pre-requisite kit. I don't think this is the case. For example, Buoyancy Aids with safety harnesses, throw lines, karabiners, etc.

Cheers, Russell

Re:Foundation Safety and rescue course. - 2010/08/24 20:42 Neil, Russell,

As per Russell's post, Robbie and I would like to be included please - and it would be good to do this before the WWS&R if possible. We can make pretty much any weekend, just let us know.

Thanks,

Brian
