Club Trips, Non Club trips & Coaching. Please read - 2009/11/29 17:18 Introduction

This is just a quick guide to clarify the difference between “club trips” “non club trips” and “coaching.” It is important that we are clear in defining the activity we are running as there are major differences in each that you should be aware of.

The club has a set of standing orders, by which club members should abide.

http://www.kayakayr.co.uk/club-documents/standing-orders.html

These include pre-requisite levels of ability for club trips. One difference between club trips and non club trips is that club trips adhere to the rules in the standing orders. These include:

Pre-requisites for Club Activities (excluding pool sessions).

i) All attendees must be properly equipped according to the type of trip. In the event of any one not having the necessary minimum equipment they will not be allowed to participate.

ii) Minimum levels of BCU skill award achievement in order to be able to participate are as follows:
• Beginner Trip (flat to grade 1 to 2 water) – 1 Star.
• Intermediate Trip (grade 2 to 3 water) – 3 Star,
• Surf Trip – 3 Star.
• Or can demonstrate previous relevant experience for that grade of water.

With the BCU/ SCA coaching scheme currently in a state of great flux (/ chaos) we have few coaches to assess star tests, and so the latter measure, previous experience tends to be used, but this framework is useful in indicating the sort of skills someone should have to participate in a club trip. To find out more about the star tests, go here: http://www.canoescotland.com/Default.aspx?tabid=564

Another feature of a club trip, is that it is covered by the club’s insurance.

Non club trips therefore, don’t necessarily adhere to the above standing orders, and are not covered by club insurance as they are not a club activity. A popular example of a non club trip often publicised in this forum is the “Halloween Paddle.”

Again “Coaching” is difficult for the club to provide at the moment with very few active coaches in the club, and confusion over the coaching scheme meaning it is difficult to get qualified at the moment. Any session defined as a “Coaching” session must have coaching staff qualified to the appropriate level for that situation (river / sea / surf / competition etc.) and adhere to the ratios and other requirements as set out by the SCA / BCU.

Having defined “club trips”, “non club trips” and “coaching” it would perhaps be helpful to describe what someone new to the river environment can expect from the trips.

Equipment:

Being appropriately dressed for the conditions, and carrying the right safety equipment is essential. See http://www.kayakayr.co.uk/about-the-club/river-running-kit-list.html
