Dangerous Weir at Rugby Club - 2011/05/03 22:29 Hi everyone,

Can you please check the following information on the SCA website regarding the collapse of the weir at the Rugby Club on the Doon.

The weir known as Alloway Mill or Doonside Weir on the River Doon has collapsed & is in a very dangerous state. As you will know, this weir is about half a mile upstream from the Brig O’ Doon & it is the first weir below Auchendrane.

There are further details on the SCA website at:

http://j.mp/mzukKI

Click on the River Doon tab.

As you will see from the photo on the website the top of the weir is still there, but the water is being channelled through a slot. We understand that one paddler went into this slot upside down, with his boat & paddles getting pinned. Fortunately, the paddler got out of his boat safely, but it highlights the current dangers on this weir.

Anything you can do to help spread the word will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Mike

29 April 2011 - Collapsed Weir

Very recently the first weir below Auchedrane has collapsed and now the flow of the river is going under the renains of the weir as can be seen in the photo. This is a very hazardous situation and the potential for entrapment is extremely high with fatal consequences possible. Great care should be taken on approach to this weir and it should be portaged. Portage is possible on river left bank. If the river is low then it is possible to carry boats down the face of the weir as it is now dry in low water conditions.

Re:Dangerous Weir at Rugby Club - 2011/06/07 20:35 Since the last posting about the broken weir. There has been more developments. The broken part has now gone and it's now a shute. I ran it in full a few weeks ago in high water levels and it went fine.

Anyone tried it at lower levels yet? we had a look the other day and it looked runnable but I'm no expert...

Re:Dangerous Weir at Rugby Club - 2011/06/13 22:37 Hi Phil, long time no see.
I did it on Sunday at 2 feet on the Riverside gauge. It was fine if a little bumpy. If you had the misfortune to tip on the way down I think you'd get quite a scraping.

Re:Dangerous Weir at Rugby Club - 2011/11/27 22:55 There have been a number of potentially serious swims here recently and paddlers should be aware of the hazards; the main flow below the weir is channelled towards the bank on river left which has numerous overhanging branches at medium to high flows. One unfortunate paddler got snagged by his BA and had to be cut free, fortunately with the strength to hold himself above the waterline; a smaller less powerful paddler may have struggled.

Please give serious consideration to portaging(cross the fence above the weir and put on in the large eddy 100m downstream below the next drop) this section if there are less experienced members among your group.

There is also a large tree rootstock/stump more or less in the centre of the main flow which at certain levels could be a serious entrapment hazard....
