Kit List PDF Print E-mail
The aim of this kit list is to give guidance on what you should take with you before commencing a river trip. The items listed are intended as the minimum requirement to be accepted during a Club activity when outdoors (rivers, lochs, sea etc.). Every paddler is responsible for his/her own gear and failing to follow the advice we are giving here, may result in the coach asking you not to enter the water. If you are in doubt when choosing the gear from the Club boat store, ask the coach! Coaches are there to help you and give you the right advice.

Absolutely essential in moving water venues! Choose the helmet that best fits you from what is available at the Club boat store. Check that the helmet buckles and straps are in good condition. NO HELMET - NO TRIP!
ImageCheck the backrest is in position and properly secured. Image
Choose the buoyancy aid which best suits you from the Club boat store. If in doubt about the size, ask the coach.
NO BUOYANCY AID - NO TRIP!

Check the footrest is in position and properly secured (it must not wabble). Both the aluminium brackets should have two knobs on each side or two plastic nuts.
ImageIt is a good idea to have a sleevless neoprene long john, especially when the weather is cold and windy. It is a must to have gear that would save you from getting chilled. If you do not have it, in the event of a cold day, the coach may ask you not to enter in the water.
Image If your kayak has a drain plug, check that it is in position and properly tightened. NO PLUG - NO TRIP! ImageAn old wool jumper is what you need under the long john.
ImageCheck you have two buoyancy bags with which you will fill the ends of your kayak. Check the bags have no holes, inflating them when you are at the boat store. NO BAGS - NO TRIP! ImageA dry or semi-dry cag is essential. Choose one that suits you best from the Club boat store. NO CAG - NO TRIP!
ImageChoose your paddle from what is available at the Club boat store. Paddle lenght is roughly your height plus 20 cm (8”). Be aware that in the Club boat store we have paddles for both right handed and left handed paddlers: be sure you have the right one for you! If in doubt, ask the coach. ImageWetsuit boots or water shoes are very useful. If you do not have them,  a pair of flat sannies would be fine.

Choose the spraydeck that best suits you and your kayak. Try the spraydeck on and enter in your kayak to check that the spraydeck fits your kayak cockpit. You can find a wide selection of nylon spraydecks at the Club boat store.
ImageWetsuit socks are ideal to keep your feet warm, especially in the winter.
All the gear is supplied by the Club with the exception of the personal gear: jumper, neoprene long john, wetsuit boots and socks. These  can be bought on the internet at a reasonable price: http://www.ewetsuits.com/
